I teach special needs high schoolers, and I like the reading level of the articles. News broadcasts are much more sophisticated and time consuming but make for a great culminating task in the content classroom. I was amazed by TweenTribune. I feel that kids are a great influence on other kids, so combining stories from grown-up news with stories about kids is a great idea. While infographics are popular in the media right now, they are more than just a passing fad. Creative performance tasks like these products not only lets students know their work has value and meaning it provides an opportunity for students to ask their own questions as they make sense of content and find meaning in the curriculum, not just provide a “correct” answer. ALL students can successfully publish! They are encouraged to check spelling, and preview before posting. Students finish the unit by writing essays that sum up their research and opinions and by designing presentations with tools like Blendspace and Glogster. I was so worried the first class of students would get discouraged, I let some poor writing be published. They write a response with support from me for organization and to check for understanding of the story. Also, the headlines are eye catching for my students. Create custom rubrics for your classroom. I'm looking forward to getting my students' stories posted so they can comment on each other's work.

As I edit their responses, this is a great way to teach grammar with their own writing. I love hearing, "WOW did you see this article!"
