We learned about notebook time from Penny Kittle at the Central Virginia Writing Project last November. And they were reassured by my presence as a writer in their classroom – that I would write with them, and that when they pulled up next to me for a conference, I’d share my own choices as a writer. Penny talked about using notebook time to help kids think and write from information. It wasn’t enough to share mentor texts, to confer, to do all those other things that good writing teachers do – I needed to share my own writing life with my kids, and walk them through my thinking as I wrote. My students worked out some of their own divides in their notebooks this day. And the invitations work so well because they are just that: invitations.

We call these Notebook Time Invitations. In this case I took a photograph similar to one from my 5-page autobiography and changed the point of view to third person. In this chapter, Kittle discusses opportunities of the writers workshop. It's a friend book to our READ! And, my students loved writing workshop, they did indeed become better writers, and I felt (generally) pretty pleased with myself as their workshop teacher. We add these to the graffiti wall in our classroom—something I learned from my friend, Donalyn Miller.

Possibility: If your students are engaged in back-up work, notebook time might be an opportunity to brainstorm ideas for their writing “side projects.”. It makes me present in my work…”.
