If you are already a Markdown convert, you are well served by the text editors available on iOS. While I’d prefer not to write in markdown, Ulysses otherwise I’ve been happy with. It includes subtle features to bridge the gap between rich text and plain text writing. It also has pretty much the same conclusion. These days I prefer not to work in a standard word processor, but that doesn’t mean I can avoid them altogether. This is something that Workflow could handle with Ulysses, but ultimately Editorial's Python capabilities are even more powerful.

Ulysses is a subscription model and is iOS / Mac only. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. I have put some stock in both design and automation as delimiters. A good buddy of mine does all of his research papers in it with hundreds of listings, footnotes, index entries etc etc etc and he says Scrivener is one of the best pieces of writing software he's used. These are all great things to have in an iOS tech editor, but the real power of Ulysses  is in its capacity to organise text on the fly. So what do you use to write your drafts? Once I’m done writing, I export to Word so I can fix it and see it all together.

I was very disappointed by Scrivener’s primitive syncing. If writing was your ONLY thing, then Ulysses is sufficient. Again, this is something I have in mind to cover in significant detail here, time willing. Beyond Word and Pages, there is always Google Docs, which has admittedly improved on iOS since the inclusion of multitasking support.

For one, although there has been a quiet evolution of multitasking on iOS, the iPad remains a uniquely focused device for singular tasks. that well in my opinion. An example of opinionated design, iA Writer provides a wonderfully spartan, and focused writing environment. But, to the question of whether or not you can now use the iPad as your primary device for your college or university work, the answer is a resounding of course you can. The iOS app is not only faithful to the look and feel of the desktop app, but a pleasure to use on the iPad. I would go further, however, to say that the iPad is uniquely enjoyable as a writing device, and continues to improve in this regard all the time. As for using it on iOS. On iOS I prefer iA Writer, for the simplicity and the simple "it just works" iCloud sync. Scrivener is project based, but despite that you could, if you wanted, use it in exactly the same way as Ulysses, with everything in one project. The biggest bonus of Ulysses over Scrivener I have found is the sync – I really don’t like the Dropbox syncing in the Srivener app, and it makes me feel like I can never trust it. While Apple has started adding collaboration support to their iWork apps, Google Docs remains the standard bearer for simple collaboration. If you are looking for something different in a word processor, Mellel is developed with features specifically designed for academic work. I have both, and am using the free trial of Ulysses to test it out. I'm using Bear for organizing ideas! Press J to jump to the feed. Workflow can do practically anything, provided your imagination and patience can drive it to do so. Ulysses is an excellent combination of a lean and distraction free text editor with a more integrated writing tool. I have used iBooks Author and have been forced to sort of bastardize it in that I create a separate “book” for every chapter.
